IT Technical Writer

Job Summary

Work collaboratively as part of a team of IT specialists and project managers in the Air Force Identity Assurance Branch, including support to the Air Force Public Key Infrastructure (AF PKI) Program. Develop and maintain technical documentation consisting of system descriptions, procedures, user guidance, position papers, and technical reports. Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other writers or personnel. Support initiatives to identify, evaluate, and field identity assurance solutions for local, enterprise, and cloud based IT systems. This role includes preparing recurring Monthly Status Reports (MSRs) covering program tasks, progress, risks, and performance metrics, requiring a skilled communicator with experience in a Department of the Air Force (DAF) or Department of Defense (DoD) context.

Duties shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Write technical procedures that are reflective of engineering operations and practices.
  • Organize material and complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order and clarity.
  • Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other writers or IT personnel.
  • Develop and maintain expertise through interaction with Operations personnel and Subject Matter Experts.
  • Develop and review requirements documents, system descriptions, procedure and guidance documents, and technical reports.
  • Track and upload records to SharePoint and publish final versions.
  • Support Working Group meetings and Status Review meetings.
  • Coordinate meetings, prepare documents, obtain approvals, and help move planning forward on multiple projects.
  • Facilitate meetings and edit, publish, and quality control associated documents.
  • Prepare and deliver a Monthly Status Report (MSR) by the 10th business day of each month, covering tasks, progress, quality, risks, customer feedback, accomplishments, and issues for all exercised task areas against the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS).
  • Document activities and deliverables by task area, including problem definitions and recommendations for resolution, with attention to risk management and cybersecurity activities.
  • Provide concise reporting on issues, challenges, or problems identified during each reporting period, and summarize outcomes of trips, technical visits, and conferences.
  • Document Registration Authority (RA) operations and Help Desk performance metrics for inclusion in program reporting.
  • Develop and maintain processes for writing and reviewing materials, with consistent timelines and expectations for submitted content.
  • Be a team player who can collaborate with peers and staff to define and explain requirements.
  • Take initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Consistently meet deadlines.
  • Comply with company policies, procedures, and regulations.

Experience

  • 3-5 years writing end-user or related technical documentation for IT or government/DoD programs.
  • Experience working in the information technology field required.
  • Experience documenting program activities, risks, and performance metrics against schedules such as an IMS preferred.
  • Instructional materials design experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must hold or be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Information Technology, or a related field. Candidates without a degree must have 8 years of relevant experience in technical writing and/or information technology.
  • Effective oral and written communication to internal and external customers.
  • Extensive organizational skills and strong time management, including consistent on-time delivery of recurring monthly reporting.
  • Knowledge of information management and technologies.
  • Possess sound analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills, including the ability to summarize data on tasks, issues, risks, and performance for formal reporting.
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize conflicting demands and work independently.
  • Intermediate to Expert-level experience with Microsoft Office, including MS Teams, MS SharePoint, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Visio, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and SharePoint Designer preferred. Experience with structured/technical authoring tools (e.g., DITA, MadCap Flare) a plus.
  • Comfortable using AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot or other company-approved platforms) to assist with drafting, editing, and formatting documentation. Use of public/consumer AI tools on program materials is not permitted; only approved, sanctioned tools may be used, and all AI-assisted content must be reviewed and verified by the writer before submission.
  • Experience ensuring technical documentation and training materials meet Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and WCAG 2.0/2.1 Level AA accessibility standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience documenting AF PKI or similar DoD programs, providing context for cybersecurity and RA-specific reporting.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Technical Writer (CTW), CompTIA Security+, or DoD 8570/8140-approved Information Assurance certifications (e.g., IAT Level II or higher).
  • Background in documenting risk assessments, courses of action (COAs), and cybersecurity activities for technical audiences.
  • Experience working with Integrated Master Schedules (IMS) or similar tools to align documentation with project timelines.

Location: San Antonio, Texas. A combination of remote (local area) and on-site work is required.
